Our History

History of the Milton Christian Church

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has been represented in Milton through the witness and personal ministry of the Milton Christian Church for 186 years. In 1834, members of our congregation met in the first church building called Zion Chapel and in 1864, our second church building was erected where church family members worshiped for approximately 150 years. Our church family is proud of our new church building which was erected in 2016 and sits adjacent to the lovely Mersey River, where the picturesque view inspires our services each Sunday.

Milton River - Milton Christian Church

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) professes no set doctrines beyond simple faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. There are no creeds, each member is given freedom to discover the meaning of a simple affirmation of faith in their own lives. We share in the Lord’s Supper as part of each Sunday worship and our communion service is open to all believers in the Lord. We practice baptism by immersion, but also accept members who have been baptized by other methods.

From our humble beginnings, our church family has provided educational and spiritual guidance to countless persons and has provided help of various kinds to many both locally and beyond the immediate community. The Milton Christian Church is ecumenical in spirit, and cooperates with Christians of all denominations who are open to working together. In October of 2019, we celebrated the signing of the Full Communion agreement between the United Church of Canada andthe Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada.

Milton Christian Church Rebuild

The work of our churches is divided up into regions, each with its own regional minister. Our Milton church is part of the Canadian Region of the Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Canada and US. It shares fellowship and activities with three other congregations in the Maritimes - West Gore Disciple Church in West Gore, Summerville Christian Church in Summerville Centre and All People’s Church in P.E.I. Within the larger church, each local congregation is autonomous, setting its own policies, choosing its own ministers, and establishing its own patterns of church life.

The history of our congregation shows a spirit of dedication and sacrifice on the part of membership that leaves one with the impression that the members and friends of the Milton Christian Church have always praised ‘ministry’ over and above personal glory! In recent years, the Milton Christian Church has exercised significant leadership in some important programs in the community at large thanks to a special fund, the Simon Merry Outreach Fund. Many people are involved with the outreach that this church is committed to bring to the community of Milton and the greater missions near and far.

It is the prayer and hope of the congregation that all persons in our church family will come to a clearer understanding of their place in the church and continue to share their time and talents to the work of the Gospel that began in Milton over 180 years ago.
